A calculation and optimization method for optical fibre transmission systems using the principle of digital duobinary transmission is presented. When the received optical pulses overlap, baseband equalization can be used to separate the pulses with a practical but significant increase in required optical power. This required power penalty is calculated versus the total-rms spreading whichrelated to the ratio between the baseband and optical cut - off frequency via the input and equalized pusle shape, when using PIN diodes or APD's.
